Mindfulness With Breathing: A Manual for Serious Beginners by Buddhadasa Bikkhu. Any practitioner, after meditating for some time, inevitably wonders what meditation method the historical Buddha used while beneath the Bodhi Tree. Many people understand that prior to his realization, the Buddha studied with many of the great yogis of his time, but most do not know what method he ultimately found leads most directly to nirvana. In Mindfulness With Breathing, the Thai meditation master provides practitioners with penetrating insights into the Anapanasati Sutta, the  text which many believe is the most direct transmission of the Buddha’s breath meditation methods. Combined with a concise translation of the sutta itself, Mindfulness with Breathing is one of the best guides to Buddhist meditation practice available in the English language.

The Beginner’s Guide to Forgiveness: How to Free Your Heart and Awaken Compassion by Jack Kornfield. Forgiving someone who has wronged you holds power far beyond the act itself. On The Beginner’s Guide to Forgiveness, Jack Kornfield explores why forgiveness is essential to our health and happiness and how anyone can begin its practice. Drawing from his background in meditation and psychology, Kornfield reveals the roots of the forgiveness process within our own internalized pain. By embracing our own suffering, compassion arises naturally, so we can extend it to others as well as ourselves.

Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, is internationally known for his work as a scientist, writer, and meditation teacher engaged in bringing mindfulness into the mainstream of medicine and society. He is professor of medicine emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and author of numerous books, including the following: Coming to Our Senses, Full Catastrophe Living, and Mindfulness for Beginners.

Coming to Our Senses: Healing Ourselves and the World Through Mindfulness by Jon Kabat-Zinn. With Coming to Our Senses, the author provides the definitive book for our time on the connection between mindfulness and our physical and spiritual wellbeing. With scientific rigor, poetic deftness, and compelling personal stories, Jon Kabat-Zinn examines the mysteries and marvels of our minds and bodies, describing simple, intuitive ways in which we can come to a deeper understanding, through our senses, of our beauty, our genius, and our life path in a complicated, fear-driven, and rapidly changing world.

Full Catastrophe Living (Revised Edition): Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain, and Illness by Jon Kabat-Zinn. Stress. It can sap our energy, undermine  our health if we let it, even shorten our lives. It makes us more vulnerable to anxiety and depression, disconnection and disease. This classic, groundbreaking work shows you how to use medically proven mind-body approaches derived from meditation and yoga to counteract stress, establish greater balance of body and mind, and stimulate well-being and healing. By engaging in these mindfulness practices and integrating them into your life from moment to moment and from day to day, you can learn to manage chronic pain, promote optimal healing, reduce anxiety and feelings of panic, and improve the overall quality of your life, relationships, and social networks.

Mindfulness for Beginners: Reclaiming the Present Moment–and Your Life We may long for wholeness, suggests Jon Kabat-Zinn, but the truth is that it is already here and already ours. The practice of mindfulness holds the possibility of not just a fleeting sense of contentment, but a true embracing of a deeper unity that envelops and permeates our lives. With Mindfulness for Beginners you are invited to learn how to transform your relationship to the way you think, feel, love, work, and play-and thereby awaken to and embody more completely who you really are. The author offers a book that you can use in three unique ways: as a collection of reflections and practices to be opened and explored at random; as an illuminating and engaging start-to-finish read; or as an unfolding “lesson- a-day” primer on mindfulness practice. Includes a complete CD with five guided mindfulness meditations selected from the audio program that inspired this book.
